HIGH POINT, N.C. -- On the heels of a blockbuster introduction of 10 collections during summer 2018 markets, Amer Rugs will unveil three new collections today at High Point Market, as the company looks to close out the year with sales up 15 percent year over year.

Raj Choudhary, director, Amer Rugs, tells RugNews.com the collections encompass a range of weaves and illustrate the company's ongoing product diversification strategy. Long known as a leader in the hand-knotted category, Amer continues to bring fashion to that market with the debuting Winslow, which is hand-knotted of New Zealand wool and viscose.

Also premiering at Amer's Showplace showroom, 3415, are the Petra collection, a 100 percent wool flatweave, and the machine-made Fairmont, which is Wilton woven of polypropylene and shrink polyester for a high-low texture.

Looking back at summer markets, Choudhary says July was very strong. "Out of a launch of 10 collections, six are doing very well. The response to those collections looks very, very promising, and we have already started to ship for Q4. The main success story out of July markets were Venice and Hamilton, both machine made."

NORCROSS, Ga. -- Mahesh Choudhary, founder of Amer Rugs, has announced the appointment of rug industry veteran Sanjay Purohit of JTN Rugs and Home to its board of directors.

Purohit, who has worked with rug suppliers and manufacturers around the world for the past 26 years, has been named executive director. As founder of JTN Rugs and Home, a recent entrant in the field of carpets and home accessories, Purohit now brings his expertise, consultancy skills, wide-ranging experience, and proven performance to Amer.

"Over the years, we have built a solid foundation for Amer. As the company is now poised for the next level of growth, we are confident that with Sanjay on board we will achieve ever greater success," said Choudhary in making the announcement.

Earlier this year, Amer Rugs announced a reorganization of the Georgia-based company's leadership structure, with the founder's son, Raj Choudhary, taking the reins as director of the firm. At that time, orders had reached an all-time historic high, and the younger Choudhary was tasked with taking the company to the next level -- something he says he looks forward to continuing with the help of Purohit.

The goal is to grow as a global conglomerate, and to that end, the American management team is working to ensure that orders placed in North America are processed and fulfilled correctly in India before final delivery to the client. "This is the commitment Amer makes to all of its clients: world-class quality and service," Raj Choudhary explained.

Since its founding over three decades ago, Amer Rugs has grown to become an international operation with a dedicated staff and team of thousands of weavers and designers. Amer's production facility includes all aspects of the carpet manufacture process under one roof, which allows carpet designers to collaborate directly with weavers, dyers and finishers to produce unique rugs.

ATLANTA--After shoring up its business model and strategy in 2015, Amer Rugs anticipated positive winter markets in Atlanta and expects the momentum to carry through the year. With tremendous growth in its assortment, the expansion into mid-tier prices with its first hand-tufted rugs, entry into e-commerce activities,s and a complete makeover of its showroom at AmericasMart, Amer's president, Tanuj Gupta, elaborates on the company's double-digit growth last year and looks ahead to 2016.

Q: What makes you optimistic about the year ahead?

A: We've had a very successful year, beginning with Atlanta market last winter. Our whole plan was to make winter markets this year as good as January 2015. I believe the momentum is going to carry over into 2016. Buyers are getting out of their comfort zone, and very positive changes are happening. Stores aren't waiting to buy until they get an order. They are experimenting with fashion colors like pink and orange. They're not just buying neutrals.

What was so positive about 2015?

Honestly, we saw 30 percent to 35 percent growth which was very solid. But the best thing about this last year was business was really steady. In the past there were peak seasons--summers used to be very slow, for example. But last year I'm happy to share with you, it didn't matter whether it was summer, winter or fall--business was very steady. Amer ended 2015 on an upbeat note and we're projecting good things for 2016. To what do you attribute your double-digit growth?

I attribute the growth initially to our entry into the hand-tufted category, and to e-commerce. Last year we increased our e-commerce business by 400 percent. Can you imagine that? We added staff, and an e-commerce manager who is doing a great job. We also worked to improve the quality of our photos, and now have an angle shot, a head-on shot and a lifestyle shot of every design. We don't compromise on our pictures; they have to be the best in terms of quality.

What sells online in addition to good photos?

We really focus on what the customer is looking for online. They want anything that pops off the screen. Yellow and greens sell like hotcakes online for us. Our [brick and mortar] customers won't come into the showroom to buy a yellow rug, but for e-commerce they want colors bright colors and patterns that pop. Online, the rug has to speak for itself.

How are your hand-tufted rugs doing?

Our hand-tufted and hand-loomed rugs were very well received in 2015. But we are still very new to the category. We are like a three-year-old child when it comes to hand-tufted right now. It's not about how much we can sell; it's how much we can make.

Customers have responded to the quality and fashion of our collections. Our parent company [Saraswatii Global in India] is all about hand-knotted rugs, and their hand-tufted production is only for Amer. Their hand-tufted qualities are so good they are comparable to hand-knotted rugs, so they are too pricey for wholesaling. As I said, whatever they can make, we can sell. We are their top priority.

What about Amer's in-stock rapid ship program?

We launched the program in 2015 and it really helped grow our business. Before we introduce a collection we make sure we have inventory to back it up. When a customer places and order with Amer, they know the production is there for them. I hear from so many customers and sales reps about companies that introduce 300 to 400 rugs at market, but have no inventory to ship. The charm of a new collection is lost when there is no production to back it up.

ATLANTA — Amer Rugs will host a delegation of 15 Afghanistan-based weaving companies and four officials from the U.S. Dept. of Commerce in Jaipur, India, later this month.

The meeting will take place May 25-27, giving Afghan weavers the chance to see Indian rug production in action. Hosted by Amer’s parent company, Saraswatii Global, the meeting is part of efforts by the DOC’s Afghanistan Investment and Reconstruction Task Force to help revitalize and grow Afghanistan’s rug industry.

The social and economic implications of helping the Afghan people in this way cannot be overstated. For a country like Afghanistan that has seen a decline in their economy and production capability since the U.S. drawdown, Amer and Saraswatii are committed to helping the Afghan people develop the best practices and open up the channels of distribution that will allow an industry and an economy to recover,” said Tanuj Gupta, president of Amer. “We are extremely thankful to the U.S. Department of Commerce, Hickory Ground Solutions and Supply Chain Visions for the opportunity to open this dialogue and continue the work of the AIRTF.

AIRTF’s most recent initiative, Sheep to Store, focuses on revitalizing eight primary pillars of the supply chain, including sheep, wool, dyes, production assets, finishing, transit, marketing and shop. During the delegation’s time in India, Amer and Saraswatii officials hope to share their knowledge and processes with their Afghan counterparts, bolstering the Afghan rug industry.

In addition to this initial visit, further plans are in the process to facilitate training, study tours and networking. Gupta says he hopes that these visits lead to long-term relationships that will pay social dividends, as well as economic ones.
